Jon Slade, Financial Times CEO - Better insights for a better world: Celebrating 10 years of the Nikkei-FT partnership
This year marks a decade of partnership between Nikkei and the Financial Times, grounded in shared values of global outlook, editorial innovation and a commitment to high-quality journalism. These principles align with the broader aims of the UK Pavilion and Expo 2025, which seek to promote long-term thinking, global collaboration and practical responses to the world’s most pressing challenges.
The UK and Japan share a long history of partnership rooted in trust, collaboration and mutual respect. The Nikkei-FT partnership reflects that spirit, shaped by a shared focus on delivering trusted journalism that helps people and organisations make better decisions. We are guided by a commitment to independence, insight and innovation. Over the last ten years, we have grown into one of the world’s most influential global media alliances, reaching nearly eight million people around the world.
Through our partnership, Nikkei and the FT have collaborated across a broad and evolving range of initiatives, from newsroom secondments and joint editorial projects, including the launch of the first Japanese edition of HTSI, to live conferences, commercial ventures and innovation. Together, we’ve combined our strengths and shared expertise and learned from each other in both our editorial and commercial endeavours. This has given us an envied foundation for our expansion, growth, and success.
Nikkei and the FT will host a joint showcase at Expo 2025 in the UK Pavilion from 8-9 July. The programme will feature a curated exhibition of our most innovative editorial and visual storytelling, alongside two days of live discussions on the future of news. These conversations will be led by some of the world’s most influential editorial voices, including Jo Ellison, editor of award winning HTSI, who will explore the global influence of Japanese fashion, and Alan Smith, FT’s head of visual and data journalism, who will demonstrate the power of data visualisation in storytelling.
Expo 2025 is a fitting platform to explore what comes next. In a fast-changing media landscape, the Nikkei-FT partnership reflects how innovation keeps trusted journalism relevant and accessible to existing and new audiences. We hope visitors to the Pavilion leave with a sense of our role in helping people make sense of a complex world.
We look forward to welcoming you.
