The Design of the UK Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka
A Celebration of Innovation and Heritage
The UK Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is a striking example of modern design, combining technological inspiration, industrial heritage, and sustainable innovation. This visionary structure embodies the concept that even the simplest idea has the power to evolve into something extraordinary.
A Façade Inspired by Computing and Textile Craftsmanship
At the heart of the Pavilion’s design is its unique aluminium façade, inspired by the pioneering work of Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer. The façade features perforated aluminium strands, evoking the punched cards used in early calculating machines—an aesthetic nod to Britain’s foundational role in computing.
These strands have been woven together using a sophisticated interlacing technique, paying homage to the textile industries that shaped the Industrial Revolutions of both Manchester and Osaka in the 19th century. The approach echoes a deep tradition of craftsmanship and innovation, reflecting the storytelling-driven architectural expertise of WOO, the design firm behind the Pavilion. Previously having worked on the London 2012 Olympic venues, WOO brings its mastery of immersive environments to create a Pavilion that is both visually compelling and conceptually rich.
The woven aluminium structure results in a textured, layered appearance, reminiscent of stacked building blocks, symbolising small ideas coming together to create something monumental.

A Pavilion That Transforms With Perspective
One of the most visually captivating aspects of the UK Pavilion is its ability to shift and evolve as visitors move around it. The structure has been meticulously designed so that, from different vantage points, the iconic Union Flag gradually emerges—a dynamic and engaging reveal that reflects the Pavilion’s theme of transformation and innovation.
Modular Design for a Sustainable Future
Beyond its aesthetics, the UK Pavilion is built with sustainability in mind. Using a proprietary modular structural system, the Pavilion provides an efficient solution for design, procurement, installation, and removal, ensuring that key elements—such as the structure, floor plates, and cladding—can be relocated and re-used after Expo 2025. This approach aligns with the UK’s commitment to a circular economy, reducing environmental impact while maximising adaptability.
This modular approach is engineered by ES GLOBAL, specialists in relocatable architecture. Their Global Modular System ensures the Pavilion’s key building elements can be transported and reconstructed with minimal resources, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and efficiency.
